An 8-day cultural trip with hiking opportunities. Rhodes, with approximately 1400 km2 surface, the largest of the islands of the Dodecanese, located close to the coast of Asia Minor in the Aegean Sea. Its landscape is characterized by smooth and extensive beaches and partially forested mountains in the inland. The history of Rhodes is marked by two flowering eras: During the Hellenistic period, the island was an independent marine state and major trade center of the eastern Mediterranean. Glorious buildings were created in the cities of Lindos and Rhodes. During the late Middle Ages, when the Knights of St. John’s Order ruled in Rhodes, for a long time the island was the last outpost of Christianity in the Levant. Cleobulus the Rhodian was one of the Seven Sages of Greece and the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The Acropolis of Lindos and the the Fortress of the Knights of St John in the City of Rhodes are among the most fascinating sights in the Aegean. Some easy hikes (90 minutes max) through pine forests, to desert monasteries, in silent mountains and to peaceful villages are possible.
